Piazza Duomo

In the center of Alba, the first 3 Michelin star restaurant in Piedmont, the kingdom of chef Enrico Crippa

In Alba, Piazza Duomo is the gastronomic kingdom of the Ceretta family, pioneers of the Langhe-Roero grand cru wines, and of Chef Enrico Crippa, one of the greatest innovators of plant-based cuisine, with three Michelin stars since 2012.

In 2005, the Ceretto family launched a visionary project with Chef Enrico Crippa: to enhance their region through gastronomy, elevating it to an international gourmet destination.

From this vision, two restaurants were born: Piazza Duomo and La Piola, two distinct souls located in a single building in Piazza Risorgimento, the heart of Alba, known locally as Piazza Duomo.

Everything is better when infused with the energy of nature.

(Enrico Crippa)

Here, in Piazza Duomo, food, wine, and art come together, pursuing the chef’s personal vision with great creative freedom, focusing on the availability of seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.

Crippa trained at Gualtiero Marchesi’s historic restaurant and then at the court of Europe’s most renowned chefs, including Michel Bras and Ferran Adrià, before moving to Kobe, Japan, where he opened Marchesi’s restaurant and stayed for three years.

It’s no coincidence that the chef’s signature dishes include one of the world’s most beautiful salad: the 21…31…41…51, composed of over 51 different vegetables from the garden, as well as other celebrated dishes such as Pink Rice and Shrimp and the Kiefer cuttlefish. And since we’re in Alba, a menu featuring Alba white truffle is a must.

While his technique is profoundly international, his deepest inspiration comes every day just a few kilometers from the center of Alba, where his vegetable garden is located at the foot of the Ceretto family’s Tenuta Monsordo Bernardina estate. Over 400 varieties, which characterize his dishes, are grown in 500 square meters of greenhouses and 3 hectares of land.

Dishes are paired with equal flair and imagination by Wine Director Jacopo Dosio‘s team, who has created a dynamic wine list featuring numerous national and international selections that showcases, first and foremost, the local area.

The talent of Crippa and his team was quickly rewarded with their first Michelin star in 2006, followed by a second in 2009, and culminating with a third in 2012.

Underlining the Ceretto family’s passion for art, the interiors were entrusted to New York curator Bill Katz, who designed two signature rooms: the main room, designed by artist Francesco Clemente, colored in pink and decorated with a large grape leaf wrapped around a globe and the continents, and a more intimate room enhanced by two curtains by set designer Louise Nevelson.

In July 2025, the chef launched Studio+: an exclusive table, a sort of omakase, for just eight diners in the heart of his kitchen, where guests aren’t just customers, but are welcomed right into their own home with a special menu. This experience is enhanced by music and comfortable sofas, perfect for enjoying the last glass of a fine red wine or contemplating the artworks that enliven the rooms.

And for those who crave tradition, next to Piazza Duomo is La Piola, a restaurant focused on typical Langhe cuisine, directed by chef Dennis Panzeri, supervised by Enrico Crippa.

La Piola was conceived by the Ceretto family to convey the flavors passed down for centuries and represents the Italian ideal of a trattoria. Its name has its roots in the Piedmontese dialect: la piola, in fact, is a village tavern where you can eat typical dishes and drink generous glasses of wine.

Art also finds its place at La Piola, with two chandeliers and prints by Kiki Smith, and 36 signature plates created by contemporary artists, a decorative element that recalls the tradition of Piatti del Buon Ricordo, ornamental dishes popular in Italian restaurants in the 1960s and 1970s.

And in the philosophy of the Ceretto family and Enrico Crippa, if good food nourishes the body and spirit, art nourishes the soul and culture.

The Secret

To further enrich and experiment with the plant varieties that color Chef Crippa’s dishes, the three-person vegetable garden team also forages, primarily on the Ceretto family’s properties.
