La Perla in Alta Badia in Alto Adige is more than a hotel; it’s a destination in itself, a world where you can feel at home, where something unique and special can happen at any moment, and where you can experience the best of the ancient Ladin culture, born from the meeting of the Celtic and Roman worlds.

Its story begins when Ernesto Costa, then a ski instructor and plumber, built a house with his wife Annie, in typical South Tyrolean style. In 1956, to obtain a hotel license, he had to choose a name, so he leafed through a municipal telephone directory until he spotted a word he liked: La Perla.

Today, there are 48 rooms. La Perla was the first hotel in South Tyrol to become a member of The Leading Small Hotels of the World in 2005, and intimacy and warmth remain the cornerstones of the vision of their sons Michil, Mathias, and Maximilian Costa, who now manage the establishment.

Hotel La Perla is located in the heart of the village, near the church, among ancient Ladin houses, just 30 meters from Col Alto, Italy’s first ski lift and now one of the most important ski slopes in the Dolomiti Superski circuit, surrounded by a tree-lined garden.

La Perla encompasses many worlds, including three restaurants—Les Stües, the Bistrot La Perla, and the celebrated Stüa de Michil, one Michelin star and one of the most renowned restaurants in Alto Adige—a 5,000-square-meter spa, Salus per Aquam, with thermal waters, and the Mahatma Wine cellar, one of the most well-stocked in Europe, with over 35,000 bottles and the most important historical collection of Sassicaia.

Sleeping at La Perla means enjoying a unique experience: each room is enriched with original pieces belonging to the Costa family—ceramic cups, headboards, typewriters, paintings, clocks, vases, and sculptures—as well as six authentic South Tyrolean “Stuben” (living rooms) dating back to the 1700s, adapted by father Ernesto, and many other memorabilia.

Of course, the breakfast ritual here is truly special, with no shortage of local specialties or delicacies, not even the splendid view of the Sassongher.

At La Perla, beyond skiing, there are so many experiences to enjoy that truly never cease to amaze: like the treehouse in the garden where you can enjoy a champagne aperitif with a spectacular view of the mountains (the house sleeps two and aperitifs are served from 6:00 PM) or drinks at the nearby L’Murin (après-sky in winter and beer garden in the summer), also managed by the Costa family.

The Secret

For those wishing to travel back in time, just a few minutes from the hotel, you can visit “La ćiasa vedla,” the birthplace of Ernesto Costa, which dates back to the 1400s. In this old house, the past becomes real through the intact old parlors, the handicraft tools, the everyday accessories of the time, old clothes, toys handmade by the Ladin people of Val Gardena, dishes, books, skis, boots, looms, and basins, all strictly original.
